Every day, we come in contact with chemicals in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and the products we use in and around our home.
While many of these chemicals are essential for our daily lives, some may pose a risk if they're not handled or used properly. This can result in harmful exposures that impact human health and the environment. This is where the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) comes into play.
The CMP helps reduce the risk of exposures to harmful chemicals by:
- Assessing chemical risks
- Preventing or controlling identified risks
- Gathering information, and conducting research and monitoring on chemicals
- Engaging and communicating with the public
The CMP helps keep people and the environment healthy.
Protecting everyone: The CMP includes groups who may be more vulnerable to chemical exposure.
Safeguarding species and the environment: The CMP helps to reduce risks from chemicals to the plans and animals that depend on clean air, water and soil.
Legislation and tools: The CMP uses various federal laws, including the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, to manage chemical risks effectively.
Impacts on society: The CMP manages chemicals to help prevent health issues and environmental harm that could lead to socio-economic costs.
