Children learn by example
This message is brought to you by the young people in the Gathering Youth Voices project.
Children are well aware that adults create violence, broadcast violence and watch violent shows and games. Is that acceptable, children ask? Some people believe that children who watch violent entertainment are more likely to become violent themselves; in fact, children who have experienced abuse, harsh physical punishment or family violence are more likely to imitate media violence.
Violent entertainment is unacceptable for children, adults say.
Parents have a stronger influence on their children's behaviour than TV stars or video game action figures. Families are in the best position to prevent violence in their children's lives, by building positive relationships and monitoring TV, movie, computer and video game use.
